Still far from the Datograph
Jun 07, 2014,13:49 PM
Well, one can like it and praise the finishing but, IMHO, it is hardly comparable with the perfection of the Datograph or any classic hand-wound caliber. Why? Because you really see that the Chopard chronograph movement was designed to be AUTOMATIC, i.e to have an automatic bridge covering the chronograph parts, etc. Like with the manual version of the F. Piguet 1185, it was just not meant to be hand-wound. The steel parts are clumsy, the new bridges shape is bizarre, etc. Additionally, the movement is conceived to be industrial, all part are solid (nothing filigree here) and designed to be easily producible, it has a vertical clutch (very efficient but not as good looking as an horizontal clutch), etc. Nothing wrong at all but this movement was just not conceived to fight in the premium league and was always priced accordingly. Obviously this version has now been decorated with great care but one still see that the top automatic bridge is missing and that the movement was not designed in the first place to be good looking as a hand-wound version nor to be so highly decorated. I would by far have preferred this watch with the automatic version or a fully new "classic" hand-wound caliber.
Just my two cents
Best,

After finally seeing and handling the new Chopard LUC 1963 manual wind chronograph, I understand what all the excitement is all about. The movement design is beautiful - so architectural, so three dimensional, so much depth. Finally, a movement to give th...

The PuristS Edition of the LUC 1963 Chrono looks 101X better than the 'standard edition'. An amazing design job. The lack of date is much to be preferred, the steel case, the black dial, everything is for the better and in a big way. Congrats to all invol...

And I read an article where Philippe Dufour put Lange and Chopard LUC's finishing ahead of Patek.

It's a very very nice watch, no argument, but I don't see why this is an uber collectors collector watch....to the degree that has been spoken about it... The story of the watch moves me very much. And I know the work and passion that has gone into creati...
