Chopard L.U.C Lunar Big Date 2014

Jun 30, 2014,22:15 PM

The L.U.C Lunar Big Date is launched in 2009.  This year, the aesthetic (form) is revised to adopt the full design codes of the new L.U.C from 2012 onwards. Both the case, dial and hands are revamped.

First edition of the L.U.C Lunar Big Date in 2009.

The previous version of the L.U.C Lunar Big Date, with the old case and the Arabic numerals and crescent small-second subdial.

The new 2014, still in 42mm and in 18K white gold case. Water resistance is also improved and rated at 50m.

Dial with sunburst satin-brushed finish, radiating out from the Big Date.
The applied hour-indexes are now in Roman numerals and the crescent small-second display is now a full sub-dial.

Hands are updated to the new dauphine design with luminescent coated.

Also encased in the new case with dual polished surface.  Gloss on dial facing side while brushed on the sides.

Above is also the corrector for the moonphase, whereas the date corrector is located at around 12H on the caseband.

Blued hand for the small second.
Pretty strange outer markings, perhaps better to leave it blank.

The orbital moonphase indicator, allows simultaneous moonphase display for both the Northern and Southern hemisphere.  The accuracy of this moonphase is spectacular, as if it keeps running, the discrepancy between the mechanism and the real lunar cycle amounts to just one day in 122 years.  It is due to the calculation and the precise fabrication of the moon-bearing disc which comprises 135 teeth.

Sapphire caseback revealing the decorated 4Hz L.U.C Calibre 96.20-L with solid 21K gold micro-rotor,  providing a power reserve of 65 hours.

Do you like the current updated version?

New version seems more cohesive...

but that may be due to the consistency of the silver dial/white gold color. Did the older version come in white gold? In either case a very beautiful moonphase with an equally interesting movement. Thanks for highlighting this watch, Kong!

Yes, previously in both ...

RG and WG. Looks better, perhaps it is more balance and symmetrical versus first edition. (for the first edition 2009 pics, please click here ) Thanks for viewing, Jporos. Kong ...

Having two complete subdials makes the difference...

and the Roman numerals also tend to be less prominent than the arabic numerals visually and this helps the dial as well. Thanks Kong, an interesting evolution of a very nice watch.

I completely agree with you.

I much prefer the subdials on the new version, and to me, the Romans work better on this watch than the Arabics. (That said, there is a time and place for Arabics as well!) Best, CaliforniaJed ...

I'm not convinced

I like the overall appearance and symmetry of the watch. However, I can't say I prefer the squashed / distorted Roman numerals for 5 and 7 around the lower side of the dial. If we must make room, why not do it this way, by adjusting the numerals gradually...

Thanks for these valid observations.

You know I admire that Gerber. The comparison is, to me, apples and oranges. The "distorted" Romans will appeal to some and others, not so much. It is certainly not my favorite element of the dial. In all candor, though, the Gerber numerals to me look a b...

Indeed Kong, I do like this updated version.

I am not sure I understand the design of the sub seconds counter, but otherwise, this watch has a very nice appearance.

You know what ...

I also don't too, Michael. It seems to me a redundant chamfered ring, which is relevant for previous design (with the two halves small-second). Thanks for viewing. Kong

Tough Crowd!

I like it. And I would call it whimsical rather than redundant. :-) Best, Jed

Rather it is ...

whimsical, and hopefully not trying to use back the same dial base and create something to cover that arc. Kong
