I was thinking of the money and hence my surprise

Goldenlutin,

Thanks for your further insight about other Swiss makers like Longines and Tissot.
I know nothing about those as I have never seen their factories.

I have seen both manufactures of Chopard (Fleuriers and Geneva); I looked for and found two key things there.
I found new metal bars (steel, brass and gold) incoming and greasy machining waste outgoing. I concluded that they make their watch parts themselves from the screws, pinions, crowns, cases and movements to the gemsetting of the ladies' models.

One of the factors included in the design stage was cost. I did not want money wasted un-necessarily; this was to keep down the financial burden on PuristS.
We're PuristS but not all millionnaires!  wink
That is why Chopard made a steel case watch for the launch of a new movement for the FIRST time.

Cost saving was allowed only if not affecting longevity or accessible aesthetics.

One of the options discussed was as you suggested: leave the date disc under a dial with no window. One advantage of that route is that people (or their descendants) who wish a date display could have a new dial inserted and the crown position blocker removed in the future. This would have been "officially approved" by Chopard.

The primary launch model is the rose gold LUC1963 Chrono HW watch that some readers have already acquired. Some will also get both versions of the LUC1963 Chrono HW with identical serial numbers.....those are the millionnaire PuristS!  How cool to have...say...both series #8, eh?

Regards,
MTF

Chopard LUC 1963: even newer chronograph movement

 By: MTF : June 18th, 2014-16:36
Chopard surprises PuristS with an even more 'purist' approach to the LUC 1963 Chronograph PuristS Edition than first thought. Only 50 movements of the unique and exclusive PuristS caliber L.U.C 03.07-L1 have been homologated and approved for the Geneva Se...

So happy to see this, Melvyn, and not at all suprised that Chopard...

I was surprised because I was thinking like a marketing director

Putting on my marketing hat and concerned about project timelines, I was prepared to compromise on some items. Luckily, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele is a no compromise PuristS-type and he insisted on doing things right. In fact, he extended the R&D period...

Since the numbers are small, the project can evolve

That is the advantage of a family owned brand like Chopard. Design changes and decisions can be made expediently. Regards, MTF

I am slightly surprised...

I am slightly surprised that you really thought that they would simply leave the date disc without a date window and not modify the setting mechanism. No Swiss "quality" brand would ever do that (not even Tissot or Longines). What Chopard did is putting a...

And a special development for the PuristS edition. A really stunning piece and movement. Cheers Andrew

True PuristS should

Andrew, Its not orange but all true PuristS should get one if only to acknowledge the purist gesture by Chopard and Mr Scheufele. One design cannot satisfy all the people all the time but hopefully the unique background and affiliation can appeal to some....

Its a cracking piece...

and I seriously like it and would love to own one. However, I am going through a task of actually culling my non-orange pieces to make space for new incoming ones and am trying to stop myself (it's not easy) just buying beautiful watches because I have to...
