--------------------

The L.U.C. 1963 Chrono PuristS Edition was developed from a dialogue that Karl-Friedrich Scheufele initiated and maintained with PuristS since 2007. The question was: "What would a PuristS chronograph be like?" This was not a call for fantastic or costly 'blue-sky' complications but a pure distillation of the function and form of a chronograph that could survive the vagaries of time and fashion.

Karl-Friedrich Scheufele attended and hosted part of the PuristS 10th anniversary celebrations in 2011, to reveal technical updates and gather a myriad of opinions! PuristS could only agree on a classic, steel, handwind, chronograph without expensive complications that could stand the test of time. The focus is on the superb finishing and function of the first L.U.Chopard handwind chronograph movement that is featured by the 'amphitheatre' or ‘arena’ caseback.  A PuristS’ passionate gaze is drawn into the movement by the artful shape of the arena case back. This is where the technique and the dramatic are fused into a horological performance – a mechanical Passion Play celebrating past tradition, ongoing friendship and future creativity. This handwind chronograph movement allows the start of a new range of exciting watches and wonders from Chopard Manufacture.

The PuristS collectors' group awarded Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele the first PuristSPro Purity Prize in 2009 honouring “the pursuit of perfection in an imperfect world”. The award was a crowning recognition for the five proprietary movements developed by Chopard Manufacture within 10 years, and above all for the “technical and aesthetic excellence” of the L.U.C Lunar One, a perpetual calendar with complete moon-phase display.  Since then, Chopard Manufacture continues to develop proprietary movements culminating in the L.U.C. 03.07-L that is the heart of the L.U.C. 1963 Chrono PuristS Edition.

L.U.C 1963 Chrono PuristS Edition

The year 1963 has special significance to both Chopard Manufacture and PuristS. The Scheufele family celebrates the 50th anniversary of their purchase and successful stewardship of Chopard since 1963 with a limited edition pink gold 1963 HW Chronograph to launch the movement.

President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele explains the origins of this project: “I had always dreamed of making a hand-wound chronograph. This model was programmed ever since we launched the L.U.C. Chrono One in 2006 and this 50th anniversary year was an ideal occasion to unveil it.”

Chopard made an exception for PuristS by issuing a launch edition of 50 pieces in steel as well as their usual gold model. PuristSPro CEO and former Chopard forum moderator, Dr Melvyn Teillol-Foo said: "Haute horlogerie is about People, Process and Products but at the highest level of watch collecting; it is about people. PuristSPro has no financial interest in this watch but the community has invested our passion, opinion and friendship in equal measure with the Scheufele family to produce a landmark timepiece. It is and will always be the first steel L.U.Chopard handwind chronograph wristwatch."

Can't wait to see this piece in person. The movement finishing will certainly be top notch! I still want to see the 1963 Chronometer. amp;fi=112&pi=6189048&ti=903433&s=&t=www-luc-1963-the-quintessential-chronometer That's my favorite Chopa...

Can't wait to see the movement, but the dial looks very nice.

It may well be a new member of the Fine Chronographs Family, an exclusive family, counting only a few, very few members. The hands are superb. As I am very picky, I would love to see mushroom pushers, and two subdials only. But I am veeeery picky. And bor...

Comments regarding finishing and size

 By: AndrewD : March 30th, 2014-20:45
Actually I think the two-tone appearance with the gilded base plates and the German silver bridges, as well as the polished flat steel levers looks fantastic. It gives it depth and sets off the functional aspects of the movement. More critical to me than ...

Thanks for these informations, Andrew.

The size of the movement is important to compare with the size of the case. Patek, for example, opted for some clever tricks to house the small movement in such a big case. More often, a small movement can find its place in a 38 / 40n mm case without givi...

Clever tricks?

 By: AndrewD : April 7th, 2014-00:03
I agree with your comments on the movement versus case size. The 'clever trick' from Chopard, I believe, is the sloping 'arena' case back. It's as if our eyes are brought into the movement. I prefer this to a 'small' sapphire window and a large bezel givi...

Yes, Chopard too, opted for a clever solution with the way they surrounded the movement.

 By: amanico : April 7th, 2014-00:09
Here is a case back comparison shot between the VC Les Historiques and the Patek 5070. A difference of 5 milimmeters between the 2 cases. It is noticeable, but is it that much noticeable? That is why I mentionned the " Patek Trick " in te way they designe...

A great example ...
