Chopard L.U.C. Chrono One - some pictures and a thought

Mar 11, 2014,09:23 AM

In Basel last year I didn´t have the time to visit Chopard, because I just spent 1,5 days at the show and already had a very tight schedule. Still there was enough time to detect something in their windows at the Chopard booth.

The interesting L.U.C. Chrono One in different versions:

Especially the movement caught my attention, even when it was not new. It was still new for me (more or less) and I think Chopard did a very good job - once more.

Some more details (from the window only - sorry):

There have been two versions (in the window) and both are looking interesting.

Today I was checking their official website, but couldn´t find both of them. Instead I found another one in white gold (plus one in YG), which I like a lot - or shall I say even more?!

Is there something not to like?

Well, maybe except of Nicolas who probably won´t like the date smile

But hey, if I think about it once more I could imagine something very nice (as an addition) without date and maybe as a manual winding version. Yes, the rotor they offer on the automatic version is nice, but still it would be even nicer (for a chrono lover like me) to enjoy the full beauty without one. The hands shown on the lattest picture are my favourites so far ...

Sidenote and additional thought as announced. Today I got the news that Eterna and Porsche Design stopped their cooperation. Can you already guess my thought?

Chopard already is the official timing partner for Porsche Motorsports (for more see here: chopard.watchprosite.com ), they have a serious passion for motor sport, they have a very nice (in-house) chronograph movement ... smile

Don´t get me wrong, I don´t know anything. Still I like the idea of such a cooperation a lot!

Cheers,
Oliver

what do you think of this version?

The LE 20 pieces boutique edition :-) A real fantastic piece, I still like it a lot. And by the way Oliver: you will not have to wait long for a handwinding version of the calibre... ...

Nice, very nice ...

and if you don´t mind I would like to ask you a question. How do the pushers feel? Are they smooth? Looking forward to the manual one ... :-) Thanks! Oliver

pushers...

...are very special: the start stop is feels very "technical" with a slight metallic sound, very exact, a bit like the patek 5170... the zero-reset is absolutely smooth due to the "hammer"-feature... you will habe to try ;-) and will be convinced...

I like this chrono but I'm going to jump in the boat with the no-date crowd

It would be nice if Chopard could make a big date chronograph like the Datograph. That would rock IMO. Cheers, Anthony

"Hours" & "Minutes" labels

 By: brandon1 : March 12th, 2014-10:29
I like this watch, especially the newer gold versions with the thick roman numerals. I LOVE the movement, and I am excited to see Chopard expanding the use of its Variner balance wheel. However, I do not like the "hours" and "minutes" labeling. It just se...

new calibre

Here you can find some information about the new handwinding calibre: [Embargo is still in place: Editor's Note] With geneva seal this is a really stunning version . @brandon: With the labeling "hours - minutes" you are right, this is superfluous, but I c...

It is a good looking piece Oliver.

Chopard is a brand I have not yet owned but really want to. It seems the models I really am tempted by are out of my range, but I am attracted to the collections. This Chrono One in particular is very nice. Thanks for the look at this watch.

My problem with the movement ...

... is the same I have with Omega's cal. 9300: For me, a chronograph has to disclose its mechanical functions. When I press the pusher, I want to observe levers, springs and wheels working, this is the true appeal of a mechanical chronograph. Even the rel...

Hello Marcus, I agree with you: I appreciate the technical improvements that the more recent chronograph movements have introduced, but they leave me a little cold. For me a great part of the appeal of a chronograph is to be able to see everything that is...

horizontal clutch is more attractive

 By: p.boxster : March 14th, 2014-04:00
Hey Marcus! You are absolutely right. The most attractive kind of movement is a handwinding chrono with a horizontal clutch in my opinion, too. The classic version where you can see all levers and the whole mechanism... :-) On the other hand a vertical cl...

You are completely right, however ...

... even a vertical clutch chronograph movement can provide a little bit more insights, even when coupled with an automatic winding mechanism; just look at the movements by Breitling, JLC, Piguet and Omega (the ). Marcus

Unfortunately Porsche automotive and Porsche Design

are separate companies. Otherwise your thought about the Eterna-Porsche Design break up and the Porsche Motorsports and Chopard tie up could be interesting. ;) shhh. MTF

Originally, Porsche Design was completely independent from the car manufacturer. This went so far that Porsche Design was not permitted to use its most iconic design, the 911, for own marketing purposes. This changed in 2003. Since then, Porsche Design be...

I am very happy about the Porsche Motorsport and Chopard tie up but...

I have to agree with others about wanting to see chronograph functions from the movement side. The trend towards monolithic designs where the gears levers and springs are no longer visibly in action is unfortunate. But at least what IS visible in the Chro...
