Chopard Superfast Porsche Motorsports 919 partnership

Chopard is the official timing partner of Porsche Motorsports

Porsche made two stunning announcements at the Geneva international Motor Show 2014.

The first launch was the Porsche 919 Hybrid vehicle on 4th March. It is the sign of the times that it is now "normal" for a racing car to have a "battery" as well as combustion engine.

The second launch on March 6th 2014 is even more pertinent to PuristS - Chopard is proud to announce it is the Official Timing Partner of Porsche Motorsport.

As PuristS are more than a little interested in timekeeping, we are excited to see what this would mean to the art of measurement of short epochs by Chopard. Already famous for their Mille Miglia and SuperFast chronographs as well as the upmarket LUC Chrono One automatic chronograph range, Chopard has also developed a high-frequency escapement. Having issued a few limited editions of precision manual wind chronographs with classic vintage movements, we look forward to a Chopard high-beat hand-wind chronograph in the next 10 years (that's how long LUC took to develop from their first automatic movement to the automatic Chrono One).

The pilots of the Porsche 919 will be wearing their Chopard Superfast Power Control watches.

Perfectly in line with the spirit of the Superfast watch collection, this prestigious partnership is an extension of Chopard’s longstanding commitment to automotive sports. The Geneva watchmaker will thus accompany the long-awaited return of Porsche Motorsport at the LMP1 Endurance Championship, with the “24 Heures du Mans” endurance race as the highlight on June 14th and 15th. 

A legendary team in the world of motor-racing, Porsche Motorsport has decided to partner with Swiss watch manufacturer Chopard for its grand comeback to competition in the LMP1 Endurance World Championship with its 919 Porsche Hybrid.

United by shared values such as a constant quest for performance and excellence, Porsche Motorsport and Chopard sealed a partnership that is based on passion for motor-racing. Born of a common aspiration towards innovation and reliability, both Porsche Motorsport and Chopard, have made their mark on their respective worlds, representing benchmarks among devotees of motorsports and watchmaking.

Chopard is proud to accompany the Porsche Motorsport Team in its important return to the international racing stage with the new Porsche 919 Hybrid. With its comeback, 16 years after the 16th victory at the 24 Heures du Mans, Porsche Motorsport will surely be the centre of attention.

Porsche Motorsport states: “We started with a clean slate and have developed cars that are more complex than any others we have seen compete”. The Porsche 919 Hybrid will participate in the eight legs of the 2014 calendar, with the first round scheduled on April 10th 2014 at Silverstone. In addition to the Porsche LMP1 cars, Chopard is also partnering with the Porsche Manthey team, which will line up for the GTE event in the same Endurance World Championship.

The history of Porsche Motorsport is inseparable from another motor sports legend: Jacky Ickx. A longstanding Chopard ambassador, “Mr Le Mans”, six-time winner of the trial, he scored four of his Le Mans victories at the wheel of a Porsche.

Passionate about motorsports and a collector of vintage racing cars, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President of Chopard, also has a real passion for Porsche and its legend. On several occasions and with Jacky Ickx at his side, he has taken part in the famous Mille Miglia race at the wheel of a Porsche 550 Spyder.

Karl-Friedrich Scheufele states: “Porsche stands for passion and performance – values we can fully identify with. We are proud to be part of their return to Le Mans.”

The partnership with Porsche Motorsport has trained a new spotlight on the sophisticated character of Chopard’s Superfast collection. The Superfast timepieces embody a wealth of exceptional characteristics while bearing the signature design codes of the motor-racing world. Similarly to the Porsche racing cars, they also represent a test bench to push out boundaries and implement new technologies.

Last but not least, the partnership with Porsche Motorsport further underlines Chopard’s long-established ties with the automobile world. One of the first watchmakers to seal alliances of this nature, Chopard has been involved with the Mille Miglia, “la corsa più bella del mondo”, since 1988. Since 2002, Chopard also developed a strong presence at the “Grand Prix de Monaco Historique” serving as the “Official Timekeeper” of this prestigious event."
