Geneva, January 20th 2013 – Anna Netrebko, José Carreras and Erwin Schrott – three longstanding friends of the Scheufele family that owns Chopard – gave an exceptional performance this Sunday before a full house at Geneva’s Victoria Hall, backed by the Gstaad Festival Orchestra conducted on this occasion by David Giménez.

On stage, after the Gstaad Festival Orchestra played the Overture from William Tell by Giocchino Rossini (1792-1868), the artists notably performed pieces such as “Bess you is my woman” from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (1898-1937) as well as “Quando me’n vo” from The Bohemian Girl by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924).

During the second half of the evening, the artists and Chopard’s guests congregated for a private event held at the nearby Little Buddha restaurant. Dinner was served to the tune of a lively musical accompaniment from the Gypsy Queens.

Anna Netrebko
Anna Netrebko has transcended the traditional boundaries of classical music to become one of the world’s most widely recognised and admired female opera singers. The Russian soprano has indeed been acclaimed as the “new reigning diva of the early 21st century”.

Anna Netrebko was born 1971 in Krasnodar, Russia and studied voice at the St. Petersburg conservatory. A fervent advocate of children’s rights, she supports a large number of charities – including SOS-Kinderdorf International and the Russian Children’s Welfaire Society – through the Anna & Erwin Foundation – Anna Netrebko and Erwin Schrott for Kids. Since 2006 she has also been the international muse of Chopard jewellery creations.

José Carreras

José Carreras holds a special place within today’s musical world. Praised for the natural and rich lyricism of his voice and for the intensity of his interpretation, he has brought a distinctive sensitivity to opera.

José Carreras was born in Barcelona and his extraordinary career has taken him around the world. He has sung in the most famous concert halls and with the greatest artists and conductors. His discography includes over 50 entire operas and numerous recitals of classical and popular music.

Alongside his career, José Carreras enthusiastically and devotedly chairs the José Carreras International Foundation for the Fight against Leukaemia, which he set up in Barcelona in 1988 after winning his personal battle with this terrible disease. Since then, other sister foundations have been created in the United States, in Switzerland and in Germany. Through his courage and his humanism, José Carreras is a modern-day hero.

Erwin Schrott
As well as being one of the most enthralling opera singers of our times, Erwin Schrott is universally considered as the best performer of the great Mozartian roles of Don Giovanni, Leporello and Figaro.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, he began his career at the age of 22 in the role of Roucher in the opera Andrea Chénier. In 1998, he won the first prize in the Operalia vocal competition founded by Plácido Domingo and earned immediate international recognition. Since then, he has been giving stunning performances around the world. A committed individual, he plays an effective role alongside Anna Netrebko in the activities of the Anna & Erwin Foundation – Anna Netrebko and Erwin Schrott for Kids.

David Giménez

Born in Barcelona, David Giménez studied piano and composition at the Conservatori del Liceu in his hometown, before specialising in conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna with Karl Österreicher and at the Royal Academy of Music de Londres with Sir Colin Davis.

Since making his debut with the Hannover NDR Orchestra in 1994, he has conducted the most prestigious orchestras and soloists around the world. Opera is an important part of the maestro’s wide repertoire, which he has presented at venues such as the TeatroallaScala in Milan at the Vienna Staatsoper, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Zurich Opera, Berlin Deutsche Oper, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Washington Opera, Barcelona’s Grand Teatre del Liceu, Madrid’s Teatro Real and Sydney Opera House.

Gstaad Festival Orchestra
Every year, the unique concerts and top-rate musical programmes of the Menuhin Festival Gstaad delight audiences, against the majestic backdrop of magnificent Alpine scenery. The Gstaad Festival Orchestra (GFO) was developed for the purpose of propagating the innovative and inspirational spirit of the Menuhin Festival and of echoing this unanimously acclaimed music festival on the international scene. Since its founding in 2010, the GFO has gone from strength to strength.

The Gstaad Festival Orchestra is distinguished by the fact that is composed of the finest musicians from the most prestigious orchestras around Switzerland, thereby constituting an important musical “national team”. Its members come from the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, the Zurich Opera Orchestra, the Basel Symphonic Orchestra and the Bern Symphonic Orchestra. Every year, the best stringed-instrument students graduating from the Menuhin Music Academy are selected to join the GFO in order to unite the first-class sound and famous musical spirit typical of the best Swiss orchestras, to create a dialogue between musicians and to yearly compose a truly unique and dynamic orchestra.
